Project:
Cleveland Browns Stadium
Client: Cleveland Browns
Location:Cleveland, OH
Client Comments:
“Durrell met all deadlines and stayed completely within budget. I fully recommend them for your project.”
-George Veras, Vice President, Broadcasting & Production for the Cleveland Browns
Description:
Construction of a $2,100,000 PA system that included the removal of 395 existing speakers, 75 amplifiers and multiple processing devices. Durrell installed just over 440 new Community, DAS and Tannoy loudspeakers, 120 QSC and DAS amplifiers along with a complete new QSC Basis/QSControl processing and amplifier control system.
Construction also included the removal of all speaker brackets and replacing them with new stainless steel custom brackets. Sixty-one of these massive brackets where mounted from the upper deck canopy approximately fifty-seven feet above the upper deck seating.
The decision to use the Community speaker products as our primary speaker system and the choice of stainless steel mounting systems was due to the extreme weather that the Browns’ Stadium experiences on the shore of Lake Erie. The speaker cabinets are handmade from fiberglass with no wood materials and triple layer grills. The speaker components are designed for outdoor use with carbon-fiber low frequency drivers and use
Ferrofluids in their voice coil gaps to protect the speaker from weather elements. The brackets were designed and manufactured in Nashville by Durrell.
Technical:
- 440 new Community, DAS and Tannoy loudspeakers
- 120 QSC and DAS amplifiers along with a complete new QSC Basis/QSControl processing and amplifier control system
- Full control room update with quality audio from pre-recorded video productions using Symetrix 421 AGCs (automatic gain control), Aphex 720 Dominators (compressor/limiter) and Aphex Aural Exciters. A new Lectrosonic six-channel wireless system using new Professional Wireless helical antennas will greatly enhance wireless reception and production flexibility.
- Telex BTR 800 wireless intercom for production/field communications.
Of Special Note :
As a special feature, four custom made large rolling field carts were made each as a self contained high powered PA using D.A.S. self-powered Line Arrays and Dual 18” Subs to enhance extreme low frequency delivery to the lower seats. This provides a total of sixteen dual 18” speaker cabinets with thirty-two Aero 38A mid/high line array speakers placed in each of four corners at the goal lines. This unique field audio delivery system will be used for pre-game practice and warm ups (this system will be turned off for the game, due to NFL restrictions), and will have a second use with speakers directed at the end zone area. The eastern end zone section, home to the famous “Dog Pound” will experience enhanced audio derived from new parabolic microphones designed to pick up the “sound from the line.” This system will deliver the “calls” and “crunches” just like the TV broadcast.
